Astrostatistics – Astroinformatics
To tackle the challenges of the Big Data era in astronomy, MAS is harnessing machine learning, information theory, signal processing, imaging, and statistical techniques. Some examples of tasks that MAS is addressing include: (1) detecting and classifying periodic variable stars based on their light curves; (2) real-time automated detection of transients in astronomical images; (3) methodologies for dealing with unclassified data and poorly sampled light curves; (4) methodologies for discovering unknown and unusual phenomena.
