[:en]María Teresa Ruíz, astronomer of Universidad de Chile and CATA Director, wrapped up the talk series with a lecture called “A walk through the Universe”
“Maybe we are the only species alive in the Universe, at least until the day we can finally make contact with other worlds. This privilege gives to humankind an enormous responsibility,” stated Ruíz, 1997 National Prize in Exact Sciences, in front of more than 130 attendants at the main hall of the Chilean Sciences Academy.
The talk, a journey through the Cosmos, began with the explosion of the Big Bang, the formation of galaxies, the birth of stars, the discovery of extrasolar planets, the importance of our Sun in the human being life; and the outstanding role that Chile plays as the main capital of astronomy globally. “We have got to the point where we can confirm that we are the only human generation that understands how our planet formed and the only one that has an idea of when it will vanish,” she states.
The Series End
“A walk through the Universe” was the tenth and last talk of the series “Wednesday at the Academy. 2015 Astronomy Festival,” where astronomers from Universidad de Chile, Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad de Concepción and Andrés Bello amazed more than 1,000 people between May and September, talking about topics like: The Expansion of the Universe, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Galaxies, Black Holes, Star Formation, Asteroids, Searching for life in the Universe, and Supernovae.
This scientific outreach initiative was possible thanks to the work of the Chilean Sciences Academy, the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS and the Center for Excellence in Astrophysics and Associated Technologies CATA.
Also, the last talk had as a special guest, the National-Prized in Exact Sciences, Mario Hamuy, who is MAS Director and astronomer of Universidad de Chile. Both of them – Ruiz and Hamuy – handed the diplomas to those committed participants who attended to all the conference series.

“Quizás seamos la única conciencia del universo, por lo menos lo seremos hasta el momento en que lleguemos a hacer contacto. Esto hace que la humanidad tenga una gran responsabilidad”, así lo explicó la premio Nacional de Ciencias Exactas 1997 a un salón repleto con más de 130 personas que agolpó el salón principal de la Academia Chilena de Ciencias.
La charla hizo un viaje por el cosmos partiendo por el estallido del Big Bang, la formación de galaxias, el nacimiento de estrellas, el descubrimiento de los planetas extrasolares, la importancia de nuestro Sol en la vida humana y el desatacado rol que tiene Chile en su rol de la capital de la astronomía mundial. “Hemos llegado a un punto en que podemos afirmar que somos la primera generación humana en entender cómo se formó nuestro planeta y tenemos una real noción de cuando este desaparecerá”, explica.
Fin del Ciclo
“Un paseo por el Universo” fue la décima y última charla del Ciclo Miércoles en la Academia. Festival de Astronomía 2015, donde astrónomos de las Universidades de Chile, Católica de Chile, de Concepción y Andrés Bello deleitaron a más 1000 personas entre los meses de mayo y septiembre, mediante temas tan fascinantes como: La Expansión del Universo, La Materia Oscura, Cosmología, Galaxias, Agujeros Negros, Formación de Estrellas, Asteroides, Búsqueda de Vida en el Universo y Supernovas.
La realización de este iniciativa de divulgación científica fue gracias al trabajo conjunto del Academia de Ciencias, el Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica y el Centro de Excelencia en Astrofísica y Tecnologías Afines CATA.
Esta última charla además contó con la presencia del recientemente galardonado Premio Nacional de Ciencias Exactas, Mario Hamuy, quien es Director del Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica y astrónomo de la Universidad de Chile. Ambas figuras –Ruiz y Hamuy- fueron los encargados de entregar los diplomas correspondientes a los participantes que destacaron por su compromiso de asistencia a las ponencias.
